In October, I spent several weeks touring the western border areas of Russia, along the very line of separation with Ukraine. What is obvious, geographically speaking, is that the border does not exist. A vast expanse rich in Forest and very high quality soil, extends on both sides. The territory of present-day Ukraine was predominantly part of the Russian Empire, and after the collapse of this empire after the October Revolution, Lenin and the Bolsheviks drew Republican borders. The idea seems to have come up earlier. Beginning in 1917. the socialist revolutionary newspaper "the work of the people" called for the transformation of Russia into a federal state modeled on the United States.
