Serbian Catholic Dr. Niko Lepes was born in 1823, and died in his beloved Dubrovnik on 30. November 1901. As a doctor, he lived and worked in Serbia for a long time. He was fascinated by literature and collaborated in the famous magazine for Culture and literature "Slovinac" in Dubrovnik, which was published from 1878. until 1884, his associates were mostly Serbs Catholics. Later, in the literary magazine "Srđ", published by the Dubrovnik Catholic Serbs from 1902-1908. years later, he left (P. 2 of 31. January 1902, P. 83) his epigram "the Slavožder and the slavočuvar". Although Blind, on the eve of his death he composed this epigram, provoked by the words of the Polish journalist Zdiechovsky at the third press meeting (today we would say "Congress"), 1901. Zdiehovsky said that the Russians were "slavers". "This is our old age, so compose this epigram, in which the Russian is called S L A V O C U V A R O M" (quoted by "Srđu").
Let us mention, as a memory of the Serbian patriot Dr. Niko Lepeš, and this short quote from "Srdja" no. 2 for 1902. year: "the former" Slovinac " was revered by his stories, epigrams and prank calls. He was a doctor, but he was more concerned with our book than anyone else's. He was a Serb with soul and body. God rest him!“.
The Nightingale and the Nightingale
"What, you fool, are you staring at both eyes?
Way to the Wild East?“
"The road to the West ",
Where education spreads and the government!“
O. K. S. will say that.:
"In the West the devil is our greatest,
The force is fierce,
We are defending ourselves from the East.,
From the East the sun brings us,
And the West leads us to a dark night.
The sun will shine on us,
Our nation, our freedom.
So that people can come to this,
I will help him."
